Philodendron hederaceum, commonly referred to as Philodendron scandens or the Heartleaf Philodendron, is one of the most classic and easy-to-grow tropical houseplants. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this graceful climbing aroid from the Araceae family is beloved for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves and forgiving care requirements.

The foliage is a rich, deep green with a soft sheen, growing along slender, trailing or climbing stems. Its naturally cascading habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets, high shelves, or trained up moss poles and trellises. When mature and supported vertically, Philodendron scandens can produce larger, more elongated leaves, giving it a dramatic, jungle-like appeal.

This plant is ideal for beginners and experienced growers alike, adding instant tropical charm and lush greenery to any indoor space.

Philodendron hederaceum (scandens) – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light but is highly adaptable and can tolerate medium to low-light conditions. Too little light may slow growth and reduce leaf size. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid letting the plant sit in water or remain completely dry for long periods. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers warmth, 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity but thrives in higher levels (50–70%). Mist occasionally or group with other plants for a humidity boost.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost combined with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and give roots more space.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Stop feeding during autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim vines as needed to control length and encourage bushier growth. Remove any yellow or damaged leaves. Cuttings can be easily propagated in water or soil, making it simple to expand your collection or share with friends.

Growth and Maturity

A fast-growing, trailing or climbing plant that can reach 1–2 metres indoors. Its flexible vines and glossy foliage make it perfect for a variety of displays — from cascading arrangements to trained climbing specimens.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Leggy growth: Low light or lack of pruning.

  • Brown leaf tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally thrips, spider mites, or mealybugs.

Background and Benefits

Philodendron scandens is one of the most popular tropical houseplants for good reason — it’s hardy, fast-growing, and incredibly versatile. Its name “Philodendron” comes from the Greek words philo (love) and dendron (tree), a nod to its climbing nature. In addition to its beauty, it’s also known to improve indoor air quality by filtering toxins, making it both decorative and functional.

Quick Care Summary

  • Light: Bright, indirect; tolerates low light

  • Water: Lightly moist; allow topsoil to dry slightly

  • Temperature: 18–28°C; avoid below 15°C

  • Humidity: Average to high (50–70%)

  • Soil: Chunky, free-draining aroid mix

  • Feed: Every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer

  • Growth: Fast-growing trailing or climbing vine, 1–2 m; glossy green heart-shaped leaves

⚠️ Toxicity Note: Like all Philodendrons, Philodendron scandens is toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.

🌿 Styling Tip:

Outstanding, top of the line diaper!
Size: Preemie, Unit Count: 30
We normally use Huggies Little Movers with our 3.5 year old (nothing against them, they're also great diapers) but recently decided to give Swaddlers a try, and will not be going back. This is a top-of-the-line diaper and excels in all ways. We use a size 7 though could *probably* get away with a size 6, and use about 4-5 diapers a day on average (not including his overnight diaper) depending on how much he's had to drink and how often he poops -usually once a day, but could be as many as 3 times, especially if he doesn't go one day. The first thing you notice about these diapers is how soft they are. I mean, they just feel like they would be comfortable on a child, and since they're in them practically 24/7, that's important. The diaper is mostly white, and the overall designs are more muted than a lot of other diapers, with "Shilo and Friends" -an elephant and duck - on the front and back. I personally wouldn't mind something bolder, I don't think my child cares or even notices. There is a wetness indicator that goes down the length of the diaper, front and back. Nice to have I suppose for a caregiver who maybe doesn't change a lot of diapers, but at this age and stage, it's easy to know and tell. Like all Pampers diapers, they are scented. I happen to love the gentle powder-like scent, but it's a turn-off to some who describe it as too strong, and of course, if your child is sensitive to that, you may want to avoid Pampers diapers. Inside, the top sheet liner keeps his skin dry, even when he wets heavily -which is usually - and does a good job of keeping poop from sticking to his bottom. The "blowout barrier" in the back also helps contain any messes. In terms of absorbency, I'm pretty amazed at how much they can hold. Being a little older, he tends to stay drier for longer periods and then pee a larger amount at one time, but the diaper almost always holds it in, and leaks are rare. The one thing I wish that Pampers did do was have wider tapes, like Huggies, at least on the larger sizes, where kids are more active. It hasn't been a problem, so I don't really have a reason for saying that, other than that it seems like it would help with fit, but it certainly won't keep me from buying or using them in the future.

GOAT
Size: 200 Count (Pack of 1)
Welcome back to the world of sleep. This stuff is my holy grail - knocks me out gently after about 30 minutes. The flavor is wonderful and I look forward to taking it on nights where I have trouble falling asleep (most nights). It works better than any other brand I have tried and I have tried lots.

"Lozenges" are the new "Sublingual Tablets"
Size: 200 Count (Pack of 1)
This is going to be more a public service than a true review (read before complaining).... I just bought three bottles of these "orange sublingual tablets." I always check the mfr's. label to make sure that they are, indeed, sublingual tablets before opening them, in case I need to return a "wrong item." All three bottles stated "orange flavored lozenge" on the front of the label. The seller had stuck two (2) paper labels on the back, one (both?) of which stating "sublingual," but I'm thinking that there's something deceiving, possibly fraudulent, going on here. I tried to lift a label on one bottle, as someone before me tried to do (who apparently returned it). No luck; didn't want to destroy something that at that point I was going to return. I searched several places on the Internet for Source Naturals Melatonin Lozenges -- couldn't find that anywhere, even on Source Natural's web site. I took advantage of their "Contact (us)" link and briefly told them what I found. This was their reply, in its entirety: "Source Naturals appreciates your time and interest. Our “Melatonin Sublingual” products are intended as dietary supplements and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Recently, FDA stated to us its position that only drug products could use the term “sublingual” on product labels. As such, to make clear that our products are dietary supplements and not drugs, we are updating our product labeling to “Melatonin Lozenges” with instructions for each unit to be dissolved slowly in the mouth prior to swallowing. However, there has been no change in the formulation or effectiveness of our Melatonin products. If you have any questions concerning your use of a particular dietary supplement, please consult your qualified health care professional. Please keep in mind that Source Naturals provides a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you try any Source Naturals product and are unsatisfied for any reason, you may take the product back to the retailer originally purchased for a refund, exchange, or credit." So, there you go. Same product, different description, thanks to the FDA, who after 10+ years of "evaluating" a popular European sunscreen which is far more protective than what's available in the USA, finds time, instead, to screw around with this minor confusing, non-descriptive stuff that is essentially of no help to the public. It seems obvious to me that all sellers should update the photos of the bottle (purchasers are going to compare and then return their items if discrepancy is discovered; a lot of unnecessary time and expense wasted) and revise their product description that briefly summarizes what the statement from Source Naturals says. Anyway, I'm glad to learn that the "lozenges" are the same sublingual tablet we all love. (Please do not complain that this is not a true review; I don't care, and have no regret.)
